Dhaka-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday sought more British investment in Bangladesh’s economic zones as the government has taken steps to set up 100 such zones in different parts of the country to gear up industrialisation.The Prime Minister sought the cooperation when British Minister of State for International Development Rory Stewart met her at her official residence Ganobhaban.
After the meeting, Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters.
He said they discussed various issues, including Bangladesh’s health and education sector development.
Hasina said Bangladesh has historically close relations with the UK and particularly mentioned the British assistance or the development of Bangladesh’s health sector.
The Prime Minister said community clinics have been set up across the country for the benefit of rural people as her government has given priority to the development of health and education sectors. “Village people have been made aware about their food nutrition and the results are now visible,” she said.
Hasina also noted her government’s achievements in the child healthcare sector and reduction of poverty and said diseases like Malaria and Smallpox have totally been eliminated from the country.
At the meeting, the UK minister assured of continuing the assistance being provided by the Department of International Development-DFID for the development of Bangladesh.
Stewart highly appreciated Bangladesh’s stunning successes and development in various sectors, particularly in the health sector saying that the country has a nursery of innovation.
The UK Minister of State informed the Prime Minister that the English Cricket team will visit Bangladesh to play as scheduled.
Prime Minister’s International Affairs Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi, PMO Secretary Suraiya Begum and British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Alison Blake were present.
