The probe panel, formed by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to look into the death of Mirpur tea-seller, has found four suspended policemen guilty.The one-man investigation committee also found then officer-in-charge of Shah Ali Police Station Shahin Mollah’s negligence of duty in connection with the incident.
The four policemen in question are sub-inspectors Mominur Rahman and Niazuddin Mollah, assistant sub-inspector Devendra Nath and constable Jasimuddin.
Tea-seller Babul Mattabbar, 45, succumbed to his burn injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on February 4 after struggling for life for hours with almost 95 percent burn injuries in his body.
Babul caught fire from his kerosene stove as it was hit by police in the city’s Gudaraghat area of Mirpur on February 3.
The committee was formed with DMP Deputy Commissioner (Discipline) Tutul Chakrawarty as its head to probe the incident. The probe panel submitted its report to DMP Commission Md Asaduzzaman Mia on Saturday noon.
Contacted, DC (Media) of DMP Md Maruf Hossain Sarder said necessary action will be taken based on the report.
Asked whether the four suspended policemen were found involved in the incident, the DC (media) declined to make any comment in this regard.
However, another senior police officer, requesting anonymity, confirmed that the inquiry committee found the involvement of the four policemen with the incident as well as negligence of duty of the former Shah Ali OC.
OC Shahin Mollah was withdrawn from Shah Ali Police Station on Friday while the accused four policemen were suspended on February 4 along with another police officer.
