Proposal for developing Rampal land by Army

Dhaka – The Cabinet Purchase Committee on Wednesday approved a Power Division proposal to appoint Bangladesh Army’s commercial wing, Bangladesh Diesel Plant Ltd (BDP), to develop the land of the second phase of Rampal Power Plant, unb news agency. The BDP will develop the land at a cost of Tk 337.27 crore.
The cabinet body approved the proposal at a meeting held with Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amy in the chair. Earlier, the Cabinet Economic Affairs Committee endorsed the unsolicited proposal at its meeting last year.
The government acquired some 1,834 acres of land in Rampal upazila of Bagerhat district for a number of power plants. The entire area was divided into two parts — Block-A and Block-B — to set up two power plants.
Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Ltd (BIFPCL), a joint venture of Bangladesh’s state-owned PDB and Indian NTPC, has been constructing a 1320-MW coal-fired power plant while the PDB is planning to develop another similar capacity power plant at the Block-B.
The BDP, which won the contract under direct procurement method, will develop the land in the Block-B areas.
The Rampal is a site located near the Sundarbans for which environmentalists have been vigorously opposing the project to develop any coal-fired power plant as it, they said, might harm the flora and fauna of the world’s largest mangrove forest.
