Commissioner of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Barrister Mahbubur Rahman has been transferred to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, two days after the gruesome murder of Rajshahi University Professor AKM Shafiul Islam.
According to a notification, issued by the Home Ministry in this regard on Monday, Mahbubur Rahman will be replaced by Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Mohamamd Samsuddin.The decision came amid strong protests demanding the arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers of Shafiul Islam.
Rajshahi University Teachers’ Association (Ruta), Dhaka University Teachers Association (Duta) and students of Dhaka University and some other organisations staged demonstrations on their respective campuses demanding the arrest and punishment of the killers.
The RU teachers also boycotted classes and exams on Sunday protesting the murder.
RU Sociology teacher Prof AKM Shafiul Islam was stabbed by some unknown assailants on his way home at Chouddapai near the campus around 3:30 pm on Saturday.
He succumbed to his injures at the Intensive Care Unit of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital half an hour later.
Police arrested 20 people, including the principal of Islamia College, in connection with the killing from different parts of the district on Sunday.- UNB
