A Dhaka court on Monday placed Sohel Rana,owner of the collapsed Rana Plaza building, on a fresh remand for five days’ in the case filed under the Building Construction Act.Senior Judicial Magistrate Tayebul Hasan of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Dhaka passed the order when Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police produced Rana to his court seeking a seven-day remand.
CID assistant police super Bijoy Krishna produced Rana to the court after 19 days’ remand in three cases.
Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) filed the case for violating building code with Savar Police Station
on April 25, a day after the eight-storey Rana Plaza came down crashing on April 24 that left 1,127 people dead.
On May 15, two Dhaka courts placed Sohel Rana on a 13-day remand in three cases.
Of the three cases, one was filed under the Narcotics Control Act, another one under the Arms Act and the third one for murder was filed against Sohel Rana after the building collapse.
The Rana Plaza owner was taken on another 15-day remand in two cases, including the one filed for violating the building code, on April 29.
On April 28, members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Sohel Rana along with his two associates from Benapole in Jessore, foiling his bid to flee to India.
The death toll from the disastrous Rana Plaza collapse stood at 1,127.
A total of 2,438 people were rescued alive from the rubble of the collapsed Rana Plaza. Of them, 12 died at different hospitals.
