Rana Plaza owner gets 3 years’ jail in graft case

A court here on Tuesday sentenced Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana to three years imprisonment in a case filed for not submitting wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The court also fined Rana Tk 50,000, in default, he will have to serve three months more in jail.

Judge of Dhaka Special Judge Court-6, KM Imrul Kayes, pronounced the verdict when Sohel was on the dock.

After the collapse of Rana Plaza building in 2013 deputy director of ACC Md Mahbubul Alam filed the case with Ramna Police Station on May 20 in 2015.

The court framed charges against Rana in the case on March 23 this year.

A total of eight witnesses testified in the case.

At least 1,129 people, mostly garment workers, were killed and some 2,515 others injured as Rana Plaza came down crushing in Savar on the outskirts of the capital on April 24, 2013.
