Rana Plaza owner’s mother sentenced in graft case

Dhaka, March 29 – A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced Savar’s Sohel Rana’s mother Morzina Begum to six years’ imprisonment with a fine of Tk 20,000 in a case filed for amassing illegal wealth.Judge KM Nurul Qayes of Special Judge Court-6 of Dhaka passed the order sentencing Morzina Begum. The court also forfeited the convicted owned one third of a five storied building (No. 69/1) on the Savar Road to the state. Immediately after pronouncing the verdict, the court sent convict Morzina to the prison.
The convict was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income and she was sentence for the other three years on the charge of concealing informations about her wealth.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director Mahbubul Alam filed the case on April 12, 2015. The charge of the case was submitted against the accused on August 29, 2016. Later, on August 28 of last year Morzina Begum was indicted in the case.
It may be remembered that Sohel Rana owned Rana Plaza, a commercial complex, built with a faulty design at Savar on the outskirts of capital Dhaka. The building collapsed on April 24, 2013, killing over 1,136 persons and injuring some 2,515.
On June 15, 2014, the ACC filed another case against 17 persons on the charge of constructing Rana Plaza building with a faulty design. Later, SM Mofizul Islam, Deputy Assistant Director of ACC submitted the charge sheet of the case to the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Dhaka against 18 people including Rana’s parents. – Special Correspondent
