A teacher of Rajshahi University was stabbed to death by some miscreants in Bihash area in the city on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as AKM Shafiul Islam, 40, a professor of Sociology Department of the university.
Sources at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) said some unknown assailants swooped on Shafiul on his way home around 3:30 pm and stabbed him indiscriminately with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured.Hearing his screams, local people rescued him and took him to RMCH. The teacher succumbed to his injures at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital after half-an-hour, Dr Golam Mostafa, in-charge of the ICU said.
Confirming the incident Motihar police station officer-in-charge Alamgir Hossain said they are trying to arrest the killers.
The motive behind the killing could not be known immediately.
The Rajshahi University Teacher’ Association (Ruta) announced boycott of all classes and examinations of the university on Sunday protesting the murder and demanding immediate arrest of the killers.
Enraged by the incident, teachers and students put barricade on Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway in front of the university and staged demonstration demanding arrest of the killers and their exemplary punishment.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday expressed deep shock at the death of Rajshahi University teacher Professor AKM Shafiul Islam who was killed in a criminal attack.
In a message of condolence, the Prime Minister condemned the cowardly attack and asked the authorities concerned to take immediate action to bring the killers to book.
She prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
