Sagar-Runi Case: HC drops bail plea of 3 accused

A High Court division bench on Wednesday dropped from its cause list the petition seeking bail for three accused in the journalist couple Sagar-Runi murder case as it does not have jurisdiction to entertain it under section 498 of the CrPC.
The HC bench comprising Justice Shawkat Hossain and Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam passed the order.
Passing the order, the HC also declined to hear from the investigation officer of the case who appeared before it along with the progress report on the investigation into the double murder case on compliance.The HC bench, however, told the counsel for the accused, that they can file the same petition with the appropriate bench.
Emerging from the court, SM Masud Hossain Dolon, the counsel for the accused, told reporters that they would submit an application before the Chief Justice for posting their bail petition for hearing at an appropriate bench.
Earlier on February 18, while hearing the bail pleas of Bakul Mia, Rafiqul Islam and Kamrul Hasan, the three detained accused in the case, an HC division bench summoned the investigation officer (IO) of journalist couple Sagar-Runi murder case to appear before it on March 5 with an update of the case.
As Justice M Enayetur Rahim was appointed chairman of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 on February 23, the bail petition was sent to the bench of Justice Shawkat Hossain and Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam for hearing.
On February 11, 2012, Maasranga Television News Editor Sagar Sarowar and his wife ATN Bangla senior reporter Meherun Runi were hacked to death by unidentified people in their rented apartment in the city’s Razabazar area. – UNB
