SC rejects appeal against Shahidul Alam’s Division

Dhaka, Oct 4 – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court Thursday (Thursday) upheld a High Court order on allowing the first-class division to noted photographer Dr Shahidul Alam in the jail. The Appellate Division also rejected the leave to appeal petition filed by the government challenging the High Court order. A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, came up with the order following a hearing on the petition.
Advocate Sarah Hossain stood for Shahidul Alam in the court while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state.
On September 17, a chamber judge upheld the High Court order to provide Shahidul Islam with the division.
Earlier on September 5, the High Court directed the authorities concerned to give the first division to the founder of the Drik Gallery and the Pathshala South Asian Media Institute.
Photographer Shahidul Alam was arrested from his Dhanmondi residence on August 5 and a case was lodged against him with the Ramna Model Police Station the following day for spreading
propaganda through his Facebook account during the student movement demanding safe roads. – Special Correspondent
