Dhaka, Nov 27 – The BNP, on strategic grounds, will formally disclose its candidates’ name on December 10, the date for allocating poll symbols, after resolving seat sharing with partners of two of its alliances-Jatiya Oikyafront and 20-party alliance. Being failed to patch up the seat sharing before the filing of nomination papers, the BNP and its partners yesterday decided to file their nomination papers from their respective party not from alliance on the strategic ground.
The parties in the folds of Jatiya Oikyafront and 20-party alliance instructed their nominated leaders to file their nomination papers on behalf of the party by today (November 28), the last date for submitting nomination papers.
The partners of the two alliances, in the meantime, will finalize the common alliance candidates through talks before the last date for withdrawal of candidatures on December 9.
The respective parties have taken signatures of candidates on withdrawal of nomination papers, according to a senior leader of the BNP.
Earlier, the BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had a meeting with Gano Forum president Dr Kamal Hossain at his Baily Road residence over seat sharing.
Later, briefing reporters Dr Kamal Hossain said that they would submit nomination papers from their respective parties due to time limitation.
“The seat sharing will be completed by accommodating the alliance candidates before the withdrawal of candidatures,” he said.
Mirza Alamgir termed the meeting over seat sharing fruitful and said the seat sharing would be finalised on time.
Meanwhile, the BNP continued handing over nomination papers to its candidates for the second day yesterday.
The party gave nomination papers to more than persons on strategic grounds so that the party can contest in each constituency even if candidature of its preferred candidate is rejected by the Election Commission, said the leader.
The BNP will try its last and stay in the field till last minute, that’s why the party is taking time in disclosing names of its party candidates.
The BNP that started handing over nomination papers on Monday cannot provide an exact figure of the candidates who were given nomination papers.
Party leaders, however, said that they will complete handing over the nomination papers to all of its candidates by today.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press briefing at chairperson’s Gulshan office in the afternoon, however, said that they have handed over about 800 nomination papers from the party.
Besides, nomination papers have also been given to some of the candidates in the 20-party alliance, he said adding that the partners in Jatiya Oikyafront will provide nomination papers from their respective parties.
“The party candidate will be settled after scrutinizing of nomination papers,” he said.
Replying to a question, he indicated that the number of seats to be shared with the alliance partners won’t exceed 60. Of the allies in the 20-party alliance, he said, the BNP shared some seats to BJP, Khelafat Majlish, LDP, Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar), Jomiyat-e-Ulamaye Islam, NPP, Labour Party and Sammoyabadi Dal. He, however, declined to disclose the figure of the seats.
Asked as to how many seats would be shared with partners in the 20-party alliance, he said parries the answer saying that he cannot provide a proper figure but he said it might be around 50.
Of the 20-party alliance partners, BNP president Barrister Andalib Rahman Partha has been given nomination letter for Bhola-1, while NPP chairman Fariduzzaman Farhar for Narail-2, Sayed Ahmed of Sammoyabadi Dal for Narayanganj-5, Syed Muhammed Ibrahim of Kallyan Party for Chattagram-5, Col (Retd) Oli Ahmed of LDP for Chattagram-14 and Syed Golam Mohiudidn of Jomiyat-e-Ulamaye Islam for Cumilla-6.
Besides, Redwan Ahmed of LDP has been given nomination letter Cumilla-7 while Sahadat Hossain Selim for Luxmipur-1, Shahinur Pasha of Jomiyat-e-Ulamaye Islam for Sunamganj-3, Mostafizur Rahman Iran of Labour Party for Pirojpur-2, Mostafa Jamal Haider of Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar) for Pirojpur-1, TIM Fazle Rabbi Chowdhury for Gaibandha-3, SMM Alam for Chandpur-3, Ahsan Habib Linkon for Kustia-2 and Selim Master for Brahmanbaria-4 constituencies.
All of them will contest the polls with the BNP’s poll symbol, the sheaf of paddy.”
On the first day, the BNP handed over nomination letters to its candidates from three divisions- Barishal, Rangpur and Rajshahi. Some candidates from Chattogram and Dhaka divisions were also given on Sunday night.

In Faridpur, Shah Mohammed Abu Zafar was given nomination letter for Faridpur-1 while Shahidul Islam Babul for Faridpur-2 and Shahria Islam Shaila for Faridpur-4.
KM Babar has been given nomination letter for Goplaganj-2, Ali Newaz Mahmud Khoiyam for Rajbari-1, Rezaul Karim for Kishoreganj-1.
In Tangail, Fakir Mahbub Anam Swapan and Sarker Shahidul Islam were given nomination letters for Tangail-1, Sultan Salahuddin Tuku and Shamsul Alam Tofa for Tangail-2, Lutfor Rahman Khan Azad and Mainul Islam for Tangail-3, Lutfor Rahman Matin and Abdul Halim for Tangail-4, Maj Gen (Retd) Mahmudul Hasan and Saidul Haque Chandu for Tangail-5, Gautam Chakraborty and Noor Mohammed Khan for Tangail-6, Abul Kalam Siddiqui and Said Sohrab for Tangail-7 constituencies.
