Security beefed up for Pahela Baishakh: Tuku

State Minister for Home Shamsul Haque Tuku on Tuesday said additional security measures have been taken across the country, especially at Ramna Batamul, for peaceful holding of different programmes, including rallies at Dhaka University, on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh.The minister said this while talking to reporters after a meeting on security of Pahela Baishakh at Home Ministry.
Besides, special security measures have been taken at railway stations, launch terminals, bus stands and the diplomatic zone in Dhaka city, Tuku said.
The state minister also said the deputy commissioners and the superintendents of police of the country have been directed to hold meetings with law enforcement agencies for ensuring safety at district and upazila levels on the Bengali New Year’s Day.
Event grounds, especially the Ramna Batamul, will be kept free from smoking and no lighter will be allowed there, he said.
Under the additional security measures, Rab and police will patrol the city with helicopters, the minister said.
Meanwhile, an instruction has been given to the IG Prison to provide special diet to prisoners.
While replying to a question, the state minister said, “We don’t think any act of sabotage will occur during Pahela Baishakh but our law enforcement agencies will remain alert so that no sabotage could take place”.
He also said the subversive activities are being carried out in the country with the support of only one political party.
Replying to a question about the arrest of senior BNP leaders, Tuku said police arrested the BNP leaders, including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakrul Islam Alamgir, on specific charges and sent them to jail upon their surrender before three Dhaka courts. UNB
