The government will take necessary steps for amending the Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) only after receiving the full Supreme Court verdict, said Law Minister Anisul Huq on Sunday.
“There’ll be no step for the amendment to the Section 54 until the government receives the full Supreme Court verdict. This is the government’s stance,” he said. Dhaka, UNB News Agency Reported.
The minister was talking to reporters after attending a programme marking the distribution of certificates of a special training course for sub-registers at the Judicial Administration Training Institute in the capital.
Anisul said he came to know through the attorney general’s office that the Appellate Division will make some modifications in its full verdict. “We won’t take any step until we get the modifications.”
On May 24, the Supreme Court upheld a High Court order that asked for the reform of the provisions of arrest without warrant and interrogation on remand Under Sections 54 and 167 of the CrPC.
Replying to another query about serving 13 years and 14 years’ jail terms by two men respectively due to miscarriage of justice, the minister said they will try to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
He also urged journalists to file investigative reports and bring to his notice if they see any such incident.
Anisul said the government has initiated the process to formulate a law for recruiting judges to the Supreme Court.
