Suit against Mahmudur Rahman scrapped

A Dhaka court on Tuesday scrapped a case, Prime Minister’s Power and Energy Affairs Advisor Tawfiq-E-Elahi Chowdhury filed against the Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman and two others.Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court-3, Judge-in-Charge Alamgir Kabir Raj passed the order after hearing the submission of the defence lawyer.
Defence counsil Belal Hossain Jashim said the case fell through because,  complainant Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury failed to appear to the court 13 times till Tuesday. The court took this failure of the complainant as lack of interest to proceed with the case.
The defence lawyer told The Independent that Chowdhury had appeared to the court only once after filing this defamation suit.
He was absent even on the day, the charges were framed. On the occasion,  accused Mahmudur Rahman was brought to court from the jail.
Tawfiq-E-Elahi Chowdhury filed the defamation case against the Amar Desh’s acting editor Mahmudur Rahman, publisher Alhaj Hasmat Ali and city editor M Abdullah on Jan 19, 2010.
The case was filed about a report that said Tawfiq-E-Elahi Chowdhury and the Prime Minister’s son, Sajib Ahmed Wajed jointly took a bribe of Tk 350 million.
The case record says that the Prime Minister’s Power Energy Affairs advisor said the baseless report tarnished his image.
