Dhaka – The 5th death anniversary of renowned filmmaker Tareque Masud and cinematographer Mishuk Munier will be observed on Saturday.Internationally recognised filmmaker Tareque Masud and cinematographer Mishuk Munier, who was also the chief news editor of ATN News, along with three others were killed in a road accident on Dhaka-Aricha highway while they were returning to Dhaka from Manikganj by a microbus on August 13 in 2011,UNB News Agency Reported.When they reached Joka point on the highway in Ghior upazila of Manikganj, the vehicle collided with a bus coming from the opposite
direction, leaving Tareque, Mishuk and three others dead.Tareque Masud Memorial Trust, Traeque Masud Memorial Centre and quarterly literature magazine ‘Uthon’ (Yard) have chalked out elaborate programmes on the occasion.Tareque’s brother Habibur Rahman Masud said they will place wreaths at the grave of the slain filmmaker at his village Nurpur in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur district at 9:30 am.An art and handwriting contest of children will be held at the upazila headquarters at 10 am.Besides, a photography exhibition of Tareque Masud and discussion will be held at Right Track Kindergarten in the district town at 4 pm.Although five years have elapsed, there is no breakthrough in the case filed in connection with the road accident. The case was filed with Ghior Police Station accusing the bus driver the same day.A joint team of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Manikganj police arrested accused bus driver Jamir Hossain from a relative’s house in Chuadanga the following day. But he was released from jail on November 17 of the same year on bail.On March 21, 2012, the investigation officer of the case pressed charges.The case is now under trial at the Additional District and Session’s Judge Court in Manikganj.Court sources said 16 witnesses, out of total 39, have already made their depositions before the court. Among the remaining witnesses, two have already died, while another one is now staying abroad.Meanwhile, deaths and injuries in road accidents across the country fell by 44 percent and 26 percent respectively in the last seven months till July 31 compared to the same period of the previous year, according to statistics prepared by National Committee to Protect Roads and Railways, a rights body working on road safety issue.The statistics were prepared on the basis of reports published on 20 national dailies, eight online news portals and news services and 10 regional newspapers.The NCPSRR report shows that at least 2,245 people, including 311 children and 301 women, were killed and at least 6,031 people injured in 2,082 road accidents from January to July this year.The number of death and injuries in road accidents fell dramatically in the last seven months due to mobile court drives conducted by Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), said NCOSRR president Ashis Kumar Dey.
