Tarique no longer a political figure, says Dipu

Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni on Tuesday said BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman is no longer a political figure as he is not holding any post since he quit politics signing a sworn statement.“The affidavit that I’ve seen says he left the country sacrificing his post. He also signed in the affidavit that he won’t take part in politics. In that sense, he is not a political figure,” said the Foreign Minister.
Dipu Moni made the remark when a reporter posed a question introducing Tarique Rahman as BNP senior vice president.
She said Tarique Rahman is a fugitive in a case and he did not show up in the court or surrender before the court.
“Arrest warrant has been issued against him much before…it has been informed to the UK and the Interpol to bring him back home,” the Foreign Minister said.
A court in Dhaka on May 26 issued a warrant for the arrest of BNP’s senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, now living in London, in connection with a case filed against him for siphoning off money to Singapore.
Foreign Secretary M Shadidul Haque, Additional Foreign Secretary Mustafa Kamal, Foreign Ministry Director General (EP) M Shameem Ahsan were, among others, present.
The press conference was arranged to brief media about Foreign Minister’s recent visit to Belgium and Singapore. (Source: UNB)
