Dhaka-There is no scope of raising any question about the probe into the killing of Italian national Cesare Tavella as the investigation agency pressed charges on the basis of ‘proper information and evidence’, claimed a senior police officer on Wednesday.Monirul Islam, chief of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit, came up with the claim when his attention was drawn to the claim of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) that Tavella was killed by militants.
Cesare Tavella, 50, an official of the Netherlands-based non-governmental organisation ‘ICCO Cooperation’, was shot to death by some miscreants at the end of Road No-90 of Gulshan on September 28 last year.
After investigation, the Detective Branch of police submitted a charge-sheet against seven people, including Dhaka city BNP’s joint convener MA Qaiyum and his brother Abdul Matin, before a Dhaka court on June 28 last.
On Tuesday, a Dhaka court framed charges against them in connection with the murder of the Italian aid worker.
Meanwhile, addressing a press conference at Rab’s Karwan Bazar media centre on October 21, its Director General Benazir Ahmed claimed that the Italian national was shot to death by members of Islamic militant group Neo JMB.
He had also claimed that slain Sarwar Jahan alias Abdur Rahman alias Shaykh Abu Ibrahim Al-Hanif alias Babu was the ameer of militant group Neo JMB and he hand been behind the killing of Tavella.
Sarwar Jahan died as he was fatally injured when he jumped off a five-storey building to escape arrest during a Rab raid in Ashulia on October 8.
When his attention was drawn to Rab’s claim, Monirul Islam said Sarwar was a third row leader of the organisation.
He said the charge-sheet in the Tavella killing case was submitted based on ‘factual evidence’.
