Thunderstorm kills 3, injures 1 in Myanmar’s Kachin state

Yangon, April 21 (Xinhua/UNB)- Three men were killed and one injured by strong wind in Myanmar’s Kachin state, the Myanmar Police Force said on Sunday.

The gale-force wind which was accompanied by rainfall swept Hpakant township in Kachin state, destroying residential buildings late Thursday.

The Meteorology and Hydrology Department warned residents of strong wind coupled with hails, thunder and lightning. Isolated rain or thundershowers will be experienced across the country in the afternoon or evening due to the disturbance and convective cloud by gradually rising day temperatures during the pre-monsoon season.

The pre-monsoon season is set from April to before the onset of southwest monsoon into Myanmar and the surface wind speed in squalls is forecast to reach 35-40 miles per hour during the period.

The authorities warned people to take precautionary measures during the pre-monsoon season.

Rain and thundershowers are forecast for the country’s Sagaing, Mandalay and Tanintharyi regions, Kachin, Shan and Chin states on Sunday, the department’s daily forecast said.
