‘Ticfa agreement won’t guarantee GSP’

Eminent economist Prof Anu Muhammad on Wednesday said there is no guarantee of getting Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) facility even after signing of Ticfa agreement. He made the observation while addressing a discussion meeting on Ticfa, National Interest and Sovereignty of Bangladesh at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU).
Prof Anu Muhammad demanded of the government to refrain from signing Ticfa agreement immediately for the greater interest of the country.
Ganosanghati Andolon organised the meeting with its chief coordinator Jonayed Al Saki in the chair.
Anu Muhammad said the experience of Ticfa agreement with other countries was not as good for them.
He apprehended that the Ticfa agreement would play a role to resist the possibility for industrialisation in the country.
Jonayed Al Saki said Ticfa agreement is mainly a political issue not related to economic affairs.
He criticised the government for signing agreement on important issues without discussing it either in Parliament or with the people.
Prof Rashed Al Mahmud, Titumir, executive director of Unnayan Somonnoy, Arup Rahi and Abul Hasan Rubel, among others, also addressed the function.
