British Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister Tobias Ellwood has strongly condemned the murder of online activist Nazimuddin Samad and said right to life of all citizens of Bangladesh must be upheld.“Violence is never the answer. The right to life of all citizens of Bangladesh must be upheld, as must the right to freedom of expression and open debate,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
The British minister said the United Kingdom continues to support the government of Bangladesh in tackling terrorism and countering violent extremism in all its forms.
Expressing shock at the murder, Ellwood said the attack is an attack on free speech. “I’m shocked and appalled by the murder.”
He sent his condolences to Nazimuddin Samad’s family and hope the killers are swiftly brought to justice.
Samad, a law student at Jagannath University, was hacked and shot to death by unidentified attackers in the city on Wednesday night.
