Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday told her British counterpart David Cameron that it would be better for Britain to remain in the European Union considering the greater economic benefit of British people.
She, however, said it is ultimately the British people who would take the final decision. Nagoya (Japan), UNB/FF-GM/SAM.
The Prime Minister came up with the remarks when Cameron asked for her opinion regarding the ongoing debate over whether Britain should remain in the EU or not.
Both the leaders held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G-7 outreach sessions here at Ise Shima.
PM’s Principal Secretary Md Abul Kalam Azad, PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim and Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque jointly briefed reporters after the meeting.
Hasina told Cameron that this is the era of globalisation, connectivity and integration. “This is the question of thinking whether a big country of the EU will step aside from this forum,” she said.
Shahidul Haque said there is a big diaspora of Bangladesh in Britain who have interest in this matter as they have investments and trade in Britain.
Hasina said there are currently three Bangladesh-origin British MPs– Tulip Siddiq, Rupa Huq and Roushnara Ali– and all of them are in favour of staying in the EU, and they are campaigning for that.
The Foreign Secretary also mentioned that British Prime Minister is also in favour of staying in the EU and has been campaigning to that end.
