UNO among 15 injured in Jessore

At least 15 people, including an Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), were injured in an attack by Opposition Jamaat activists in Jessore on Saturday, the first day of its 72-hour blockade throughout Bangladesh.Police said the attackers damaged the UNO’s car and hit him in the head at Manirampur around noon.
UNO Sharif Nazrul Islam received eight stitches on his head.
Two other policemen with broken limbs had been admitted to the Upazila Health Complex.
Manirampur Police Station OC Mir Rejaul Islam said the UNO went to the Upazila’s Chalkidanga bazaar to seize tree trunks used to block roads with 25 policemen.
UNO Islam ordered police to arrest Jamaat-e-Islami leader Humayun Kabir Mukta.
Enraged, the Jamaat leader’s supporters fought pitched battles with police.
They had fired three shots and exploded nearly 25 locally made bombs, said OC Islam.
The UNO was hit in the head and his vehicle was damaged.
Police, too, were attacked when they tried to rescue him.
Nine policemen, including the OC, were injured.
Manirampur police’s Sub-Inspector Nishikant’s hand and Constable Idris Ali’s leg were broken, said OC Islam.
Police left the scene with the UNO quickly.
Upazila Health Complex doctor Samaresh Dutta said the UNO had been given eight stitches on his head. – bdnews24.com
