UP office building completed in Chuadanga

The construction works of Notipota Union Parisad office building in Damurhuda Upazila
here has been completed at a total cost of Tk 59,88,000.
The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) had constructed the two storied
new UP office building in Notipota.
Office sources said there are rooms for chairman, secretary, ward members, accounts
section, tax collectors, hall room, guestroom and field workers’ room. Besides, there are
health and family department, food godown and store room.
The building will open formally within short time, the sources added. -BSS, Chuadanga
Combating institutional punishment against children
Utmost importance should be given to formulation of a plan of action to combat physical
and mental punishment against children at educational institutions for the sake of their
proper development, speakers at a discussion said here yesterday.
They viewed proper and effective enforcement of the directives given by the most
respectable High Court has become an urgent need to end the unethical punishment.
The observations came at a view-sharing meeting styled “High Court’s Directives to end
Physical and Mental Punishment against Children in any Institution” held at Yang King
Community Center in Rajshahi city.
Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) organised the meeting in association
with Save the Children aiming at sensitising the teachers, guardian, students and other
stakeholders to end such institutional punishment.
BLAST local unit coordinator Advocate Abdus Samad pained an overview of the
discussion in his welcome speech adding a collective effort is needed to free the
educational institutions from any physical and mental punishment against students.
District Education Officer Khandaker Ruhul Amin, National Committee President of
Campaign for Good Governance Mustafizur Rahman Khan and
General Secretary of Rajshahi Advocates Association Mainul Ahsan Panna spoke on the
occasion as guests of honour. BLAST local unit Vice-president Advocate Abdul Mottaleb
chaired the session.
In their keynote presentations, Mahbuba Akhter and Advocate Sihab Ahmed Siraji,
Advocacy Coordinators of BLAST, said the children should not be given physical and
mental punishment at any means. The High Court has clear-cut directions in this regard.
They added the Ministry of Education has distributed circular banning physical and
mental punishment against children in the educational institutions.
Khandaker Ruhul Amin said the department of education has been working relentlessly
to make the institutions learning place amid amusement to the students. “The present
government is very much positive in this regard”, he added.
Taking part in the open discussion, TIB Area Manager Monirul Haque and Executive
Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat called for launching an awareness
programme for successful enforcement of the directives and government circular.
