Visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Biswal will meet BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Friday evening.
The meeting will be held at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan residence at 6pm, her press wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan told journalist.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP chairperson’s advisers Reaz Rahman and Sabihuddin Ahmed and BNP vice-chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury are likely to be present on the occasion.Nisha Biswal had a meeting with Khaleda also during her earlier visit to Bangladesh before the January-5 election last year.
BNP sources said issues relating to the country’s latest political situation, the US’ position about the current regime, January-5 polls and a fresh election are likely to come up for discussions at the meeting.
The party considers the meeting very important as the US has been pressing the government for holding a fresh inclusive election as it thinks the 10th parliamentary polls were ‘deeply flawed’ as it did not credibly express the will of people and this could have serious ramifications for stability in the country and the region.
This is Biswal’s second visit to Bangladesh as she had been here soon after taking over as the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs on October 21, 2013.
During the visit, she will have meetings with high-level government officials and labour, RMG sector and business community leaders apart from Khaleda. – UNB
