VoIP haul: 37 foreigners remanded again

A Dhaka court has remanded 37 foreigners, arrested for running illegal VoIP business, in four days’ police custody for further interrogation.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Anwar Sadat on Thursday also sent five Bangladeshis arrested to police custody for the number of days.
The investigating officer had pleaded for a seven-day remand.
The arrested men were accused of causing huge economic damage by running the illegal VoIP business. Police needed to further question them to get information about their accomplices.
Five of the 37 foreigners are Chinese and the rest are from Tainwan. Seven are women.
A RAB raid on Dec 22 night last year had found a large number of illegal VoIP equipment in a six-storey building in Dhaka’s Uttara Sector 12.
At least Tk 100 million worth of instruments were seized during the raid.
The arrestees on Dec 24 were remanded for a day for possessing illegal VoIP equipment.
