10,000 police to be deployed in city during Jamaat’s hartal Sunday

Around 10,000 additional police personnel will be deployed in the capital from 6:00 am on Sunday to maintain law and order during Jamaat-e-Islami’s countrywide 24-hour hartal.Earlier on Thursday, Jamaat called the 24-hour countrywide hartal for Sunday protesting the Supreme Court order upholding the death penalty of its ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami.
Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md Maruf Hossain Sarder told UNB that an adequate number of police will remain on high alert to avert any unpleasant incident in the capital during the shutdown that will begin from 6:00 am on Sunday.
He said police will set up check posts at a number of strategic points and search suspected people.
Besides, plainclothes police will be posted at a number of places with still and video cameras to identify if any one tries to make any kind of trouble during the hartal hours, Maruf added.
Earlier, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court rejected death-row war crimes convict Nizami’s review petition against its previous verdict in favour of his death penalty that was earlier awarded by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).
