The BNP-led 18-party alliance’s Wednesday’s rally appears uncertain as there has been no government permission yet to stage it in the city.The rally was originally scheduled for Monday in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office and the opposition alliance shifted it to Wednesday after having been denied the government permission.
The programme is aimed at forcing the ruling alliance to reinstate the caretaker government system.
The rally is also meant for registering the opposition’s protest for rejecting BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s 48-hour ultimatum for caretaker government system and May 5 crackdown on Hefajat activists at Shapla Chattar, and pressurising the “failed regime” to quit.
BNP spokesman Shamsuzzaman Dudu told UNB that the government did not allow them to stage the rally as of 9pm on Tuesday.
Asked what if the government denies them permission again, he said a decision will be taken about the rally at a meeting of the party’s senior leaders on Tuesday night. The meeting will be held at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.
Contacted, deputy police commissioner (Motijheel division) Ashrafuzzaman said they have not yet permitted the opposition to hold the programme.
Requesting anonymity, another senior police official said there is a slim chance for the opposition to get permission to stage the rally.
On Thursday night, BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed announced the programme for Monday at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office after a meeting of the party policymakers.
On Monday, at a press briefing, Dudu said the rally will be held on Wednesday at the same venue at 3.00pm as the government did not allow them to stage it on that day. UNB
