2 to die, 3 get life in Barisal 5-murder case

Barisal – A court here on Tuesday sentenced two siblings to death and three other people to life term imprisonment for the killing of five members of a family in Mehendiganj upazila in 2008.The condemned convicts are Shahjahan Boiragi and his brother Sahidul Islam Shahed Boiragi. Of them, Shahjahan was tried in absentia. The lifers are Abul Bashar Badshah Khan, Sultan Khan and Qayum Khan.
The court also fined all the convicts TK 5,000 each, in default, to suffer six months more rigorous imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, Tanjila Begum and her four daughters — Anjuman, Sathi, Jannat and Ferdousi — were killed at Khalishar Uttarpar in the upazila on June 30, 2008.
A case was filed with Mehendiganj Police Station in this connection the following day.
Police arrested Shahjahan and Shahidul, two brothers of Tanjila Begum for their suspected involvement in the killing.
Shahjahan and Shahidul confessed to the killing before the court. Police submitted a chargesheet against 10 people on March 19, 2009.
After examining the records and 42 witnesses, Additional Session Judge Mohammad Matier Rahman handed down the verdict acquitting five other accused. – UNB
