22-day ban on fishing from Oct 7 to protect mother hilsa

The government has imposed a 22-day ban on fishing, carrying, hoarding, trading and transporting of all fish, with particular emphasis on Hilsha and Jatka (Hilshafry) from October midnight to 29 October in the sweet waters of Chandpur belt, as part of a long-term program to boost the country.

“The restricted area will cover around 100 kilometers starting from Char Alexander of Lakshmipur district up to Shatnol under Matlab North Upazila of Chandpur district,” District Fisheries Officer H.M. Mohibullah told UNB on Saturday.

For violation of the recently imposed restriction on catching, selling and transporting fishes, the offenders will be jailed for one or two years or fined, he added.A total of 46,000 fishermen including 27,800 registered fishermen are there in the district, he said.
