The schedule for the second phase of upazila election is likely to be announced this week, said Election Commissioner Shah Nawaz on Monday. “The second phase of upazila election will have to be held at the end of February or early March this year due to a legal obligation. The schedule for the second phase election will have to be announced this week,” he told reporters at his Election Commission Secretariat office in the city. As per the law, the election to upazila Parishads will have to be completed within 180 days before the expiry of their tenures. A good number of Upazila Parishads is going to complete their tenures, the commissioner said. The staggering upazila election will be held across the country till May next, he said adding that foolproof security measures will be taken during the polls. Earlier on Sunday, the EC announced election schedule for 102 Upazila Parishad fixing balloting date for February 19. – UNB
