127 killed by law enforcers during anti-narcotics drive
Dhaka, May 31– A total of 323 people were killed in different incidents across the country during the month of May, according to a survey prepared by Bangladesh Human Rights Commission (BHRC).
BHRC published the report on Thursday based on reports gathered from different districts, upazilas, municipalities and national dailies.
According to the BHRC, some 127 were killed in reported gunfights during anti-narcotics drives across the country which indicates extreme deterioration in law and order situation.
Expressing grave concern over the incidents, the organisation also said the average rate of killing per day is 10.
The human rights organisation also urged the law enforcement agencies and the other offices concerned of the government to perform their duties with more responsibility.
It is possible to bring the number of killing to zero through the dynamic activities of the law enforcement agencies, said BHRC.
Only the establishment of the rule of law can reduce the growing trend of killing incidents, it said.
The organisation also urged the government and the law enforcement agencies to take effective measures for stopping child torture as well as killings.
According to the BHRC survey, among 323, five were killed for dowry, 35 in family feud, 71 in social violence while five in political violence.
Besides, five people were killed due to the negligence of physicians, eleven in abduction incidents, seven in disappearing cases, 50 killed mysteriously and seven were killed after ‘rape’.
Meanwhile, at least 203 people were killed in road accidents and 25 died in suicide incidents, according to the report.
Besides, 37 people were killed after ‘rape’ while nine died for sexual harassment and eleven were killed after torture over dowry. – UNB
