A court here on Monday sent 37 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student front Islami
Chhatra Shibir to jail turning down their bail plea in an arson case.
Of the activists, there were Nandigram upazila unit Jamaat secretary Manjurul Islam,
Nandigram municipality unit Jamaat ameer Jahidul Islam and president and secretary of
Nandigram upazila unit Shibir.
According to the case statement, some activists of Jamaat-Shibir and their supporters
set fire to many government establishments, including the Nandigram upazila parishad
building, centering the ‘incident of appearing of Jamaat Nayeb-e-ameer Saydee’s face on
the moon’ on March 3 this year.
A case was filed against 10,000 people, including a good number of Jamaat-Shibir
activists, in connection with the arson attack.
Later, the 37 accused (Jamaat-Shibir activists) secured anticipatory bail from the High
Court for a certain time.
When they surrendered before a lower court after their bail period ended and sought
permanent bail, Judge Abdul Hamid of Bogra Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s
Court sent them to jail rejecting their prayer. -UNB, Bogra
