40 Hefajat men remanded in Dhaka, 5000 sued in Ctg

DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed 40 leaders and activists of Hefajat-e-Islam on 2-day remand for police interrogation in cases filed over Sunday’s violence.Metropolitan Magistrate Ismail Hossain passed the order after hearing
Shahbagh Thana Police produced 20 Hefajat men before the court with 5-day remand pleas while Ramna thana produced 20 others with 7-day remand plea, banglanews correspondent reports.
On Sunday, activists of Hefajat went berserk in the name of Dhaka siege and rally in the capital.
After the violence, Shahbagh and Ramna Thana police held the Hefajat men under section 54.  More than 5, 000 people were sued for their alleged involvement in Monday’s fierce clashes between Hefajat-e-Islami and police in Hathazari upazila of the district.  Hathazari police station SI Jahangir Arif filed the case on Tuesday morning.                                                                       Officer-in Charge of the police station AKM Liakat Ali told banglanews, “The case was filed against over 5,000 people mentioning the name of 25 hefajat men for attacking police, vandalism and arson.  The process is underway to file another case in the incident, the OC added.                                                                                                                                                                               Earlier on Monday afternoon, six people were killed and 25 others injured as Hefajat men engaged in clashes with law enforcers in different areas of Hathazari upazila of the district over a rumor spread that police arrested their leader Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi.                                                                                                                                                                                                                    The deceased were identified as Saidur Rahman, 35, Sergeant of Intelligence Wing of Bangladesh Army, Md. Sajjad, 17, Anwar Jehed, 22, Jasim Uddin, 30, Abu Noman, 40, and Mohammad Mamun, 24.  Saidur, Anwar, Jasim and Noman succumbed to their injuries at Chittagong Medical College Hospital while two others at Hathazari Private Modern Hospital.
