Human rights organization Odhikar Director ASM Nasiruddin Elan on
Wednesday morning surrendered to Dhaka’s Cyber Crime Tribunal and the
judge sent him to jail rejecting his bail petition in a case filed for
allegedly distorting facts about eviction of Hefajat activists.
Judge KM Shamsul Alam passed the order after fugitive Elan surrendered
to his court with a petition seeking bail. The judge rejected the
petition after hearing.
Elan had been absconding since September.
Earlier, he sought bail to the High Court Division of the Supreme
Court while the apex court asked him to surrender to the Cyber Crime
Tribunal.
Secretary of Odhikar Adilur Rahman Khan is also an accused in the case
filed for distorting facts about eviction drive against
Hefajat-e-Islam leaders and activists from Shapta Chattar of Motijheel
hub area in the capital on May 5.
On September 11, the Cyber Tribunal took into cognizance the charges
against the duo and issued an arrest order against Elan.
On August 10, Adilur Rahman was arrested in the case in front of his
house at Gulshan in the city. On October 11, he was released after
High Court Division granted a six-months’ interim on October 8.
