AL wants EC steps against BNP

The ruling Awami League has urged the Election Commission (EC) to take legal actions against the BNP, the main opposition party, for allegedly planning to foil the national polls.A delegation, led by MK Alamgir, made the request while meeting Election Commissioner Md Abdul Mobarak on Thursday.
The Awami League’s move came ahead of the BNP-led 18-Party alliance Dec 29 ‘march towards Dhaka’.
The Opposition has boycotted the Jan 5 general elections. It has been pressing for a non-party government to supervise the polls and suspension of the election schedule.
In her address to the nation, Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia had urged everyone to march to the capital to foil the polls.
MK Alamgir said “thwarting the polls” is a punishable crime.
“We have asked [the EC] to take steps against the BNP,” he said.
The Awami League expects action from the EC as well as the government. The EC has promised ‘proper’ measures, he said.
They have also sought the impounding of all illegal arms ahead of the polls.
“We discussed these two matters with the EC and they have concurred,” said Alamgir.-bdnews24.com
