BD makes progress in socio-economic sectors

Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni MP addressed a seminar on ‘Current Situation in Bangladesh: Potential and Challenges’ at the European Institute of Asian Studies (EIAS) on Wednesday morning.Based in Brussels and Luxemburg, EIAS is a think tank which focuses on EU-Asia relations to promote better understanding between the two regions.
The Seminar was chaired by Dick Gupwell, the Vice Chairman of EIAS. Paulo Casaca, former Member of European Parliament and member of the Portuguese Parliament also presented an introductory paper on Bangladesh in the
seminar.
In her presentation the Foreign Minister elaborated various political, economic and social aspects of Bangladesh and the challenges that it faces for a better future.
The Foreign Minister spoke on different recent political issues including election, political violence and war crime tribunal.
Referring to the recent political developments, the Foreign Minister said that politics in Bangladesh should ‘uphold the aspired and noble values enshrined in Bangladesh Constitution’.
Touching on the socio-economic success of Bangladesh, she said that Bangladesh has made a tremendous progress in social and economic sectors.
Bangladesh posted a growth of 6 percent over a decade and also is the third largest economy of the South Asia.  It has been identified by various global assessments as the ‘next growth story’, the Foreign Minister mentioned.
The Foreign Minister also informed that after the Savar accident the government, industry and the workers reached to an ILO facilitated tripartite agreement on safety issues in the RMG industry.
She said that all these stakeholders are committed to take actions to ensure workers’ safety and rights in the industry and EU will remain a partner of Bangladesh in these efforts.
The seminar was attended by a large number of audiences.
Later, in the afternoon, the Foreign Minister inaugurated the MRP system in Bangladesh Embassy in Brussels. (Banglanews24.com)
