National HR body chair for ending dirty politics

Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman on Thursday asked the political parties to shun their dirty politics if they really love the country.“Give up the politics that maligns the universal humanity and instigates killing in the name of religion affecting the role of law and the state harmony,” he said while briefing reporters at the NHRC office.
The NHRC chairman said the opposition political parties have been enforcing hartals for the last several months reducing the impact of the weapon of mass protests.
“Though it is an effective tool as a democratic programme,” Dr Mizan said, “Hartals are these days being enforced to gain only party interest instead of considering the rights of common people.”
The NHRC expects a more responsible role from all political parties to keep the country’s educational activities normal, he said.
“A negative perception is growing among foreigners due to hartal and political violence… our trade and commerce will run into trouble if things don’t improve,” the NHRC chairman said.
He said the Commission urges the parties to find out alternative peaceful political programmes to hartal as violence has made the country’s human rights situation fragile.
NHRC members Nilufar Dewan and Prof Dr Nirup Kumar Chakma and NHRC secretary Tajul Islam Chowdhury were, among others, present. (Source: UNB)
