BD will take initiative to resolve Rohingya issue internationally

Bangladesh, as an active member of OIC contact group on Rohingya issue, has emphasised a collective role of international community to address the issue.Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali highlighted measures taken by the government of Bangladesh to resolve the matter with a constructive dialogue with the government of Myanmar, which is expected to get due importance after the assumption of office by the new government there, led by Aung San Suu Kyi of NLD.

The issue came up for discussion when AH Mahmood Ali met Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Iyad Ameen Madani at his office in Jeddah on Thursday, said a Foreign Ministry press release on Friday.

In the meeting, the Bangladesh Foreign Minister offered readiness of the government of Bangladesh to extend full support to the cause of Muslim Ummah where OIC has been engaged.

He briefed the Secretary General about initiatives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for socio-economic development of the country.

He said Bangladesh under Sheikh Hasina’s visionary leadership has been making efforts for peace and development referring to the initiative to adoption of UNGA resolution of Culture of Peace and non-violence earlier at the UN in 1999.

The OIC Secretary General briefed Bangladesh Foreign Minister about the OIC’s priorities and the forthcoming summits and conferences.

He reaffirmed the OIC’s interest to continue its engagement with Bangladesh to enhance peace and development as well as political stability across the Muslim world.

Discussions during the meeting revolved around a number of issues of common interest as well as the diverse challenges facing the OIC Member States.
