Dhaka police charge sheet sux people for 2 college-student deaths

Dhaka, Sept 6 – The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) submitted a charge sheet before a Dhaka court yesterday, accusing six people over the death of two college students in a deadly road crash in the capital’s Kurmitola area.DB inspector Kazi Shariful Islam submitted the charge sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka yesterday.
The charge sheet has been filed against six people, including Shahadat Hossain, owner of Noor bus, for allegedly killing two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment School. The charge sheet was filed under Section 304 of the Penal Code.
The six accused are two Jabal-E Noor Paribahan’s bus owners Shahadat Hossain and Jahangir Alam, two drivers Masum Billah and Zubayer Sumon and two assistants Enayet Hossain and Kazi Assad. Two students died due to the bus owned by Shahadat Hossain. Kazi Asad and Jahangir Alam are still absconding.
According to the charge sheet, the driver and driver’s assistant did not listen to the passengers in the greed of getting more passengers, instead of thinking of their security.
One of the buses blocked the road after getting down from the Zillur Rahman flyover. The other one driver’s Masum Billah lifted the bus over 14-15 students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College, who stood for the bus at 12:30 pm. Two students died on the spot.
It is also said in the charge sheet that earlier these two buses were over trekking two or three times on that day.
Earlier, On July 29, two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College—Abdul Karim alias Rajib Uddin, 18, and Dia Khanam Mim, 17—were run over and killed by a bus of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan during an alleged race between three buses on the Airport Road.
The accident triggered a nationwide protest by students, demanding safe roads and seeking justice for the victims.
Dia’s father filed a case with the Cantonment police station in connection with the accident.
On August 1, in raid Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-1 detained drivers and helpers of Jabel-E Noor from capital’s Mirpur and Barguna district. On that day in the evening, RAB arrested the owner of the bus Shahadat Hossain (60).
The accused drivers had licences only for light vehicles like motorcycles and microbuses, and yet, they were driving heavy vehicles like buses with these. They had no professional licence for driving buses. The owner allowed them to drive heavy vehicles despite knowing that they did not have the requisite licences. The helpers of the two buses were accused of not preventing the drivers from driving the buses recklessly.
The DB later launched its investigation into the case.
Among the arrestees, bus driver Masum and its owner Shahadat gave confessional statements under Section 164 before a court.
The registration number of the three buses of Jabal-E Noor which were involved with the accident, is Dhaka Metro B-11-997, Dhaka Metro B-11-7657 and Dhaka Metro B-11-7580. Masum Billah was driven Metro B-11-997 this bus which ran over the students.
