Passengers’ Welfare Society leader held on extortion charge

Dhaka, Sept 6 – The secretary general of Jatri Kalyan Samity, a welfare body for public transport passengers was arrested on charges of extortion, yesterday. Dadan Fakir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mirpur Model Police Station told the independent that Mirpur police arrested Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury from Narayanganj at his home around 33:00 am yesterday.
“There is an extortion case against him, filed a few days ago. A person name Dulal filed the case against him over extortion. The case no is 14,” OC added.
However, a Facebook post from the page of Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury posted that “all on a sudden Mirpur Thana police arrested him and took him to the police station. No idea what is the matter happing here. (I am a computer operator of his office)”.
Jatri Kalyan Samity is known for coming up with statistics on the road and transport-related issues. They regularly come up with stats on road crash deaths in a follow-up of Eid.
This association called themselves as non-profitable, non-political and passengers’ welfare organizations.
Last Friday was the association’s last public briefing, where they said 259 people were killed on roads during Eid-ul-Azha holidays. What they said was a rise from previous times. However, after every Eid occasions, this organization has published the data on road accidents.
The association’s secretary Mozammel Hoque was present in the briefing held at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity.
There he suggested 10 recommendations to reduce the road accidents after following seven major reasons for these accidents. – Staff Reporter
