Dhaka, June 21 – The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday deployed its 57 observers at the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls to monitor and prepare reports on how the elections are held. EC sources said the GCC polls will be held on June 26. For the purpose of holding the civic polls in a free, fair, peaceful and impartial way and to monitor the elections of each centre, EC is deploying its 57 observers.
These observers will work for two days starting on June 25 and the day of elections. They will submit reports to the EC what they will find in the field during elections.
The observers include senior district election officers, district election officers, Upazila district officers and Thana election officers.
Besides, there would be two other officers who will act as chief coordinator and deputy chief coordinator to monitor and coordinate the functions of the election observers.
The election observers will receive the necessary directives from the briefing of the election commission at the Election Commission Secretariat in the capital on June 24 and will report to the respective returning officer on the same day after the briefing.
The returning officer in consultation with the chief coordinator will dole out the work to the respective areas and sent a list of it to the Election Commission Secretariat.
After getting duties, the observers will monitor the night before elections the members of the law enforcers and the officers who will hold polls whether they are carrying out their duties or not.
The observers will instantly inform by telephone or mobile phone or in writing to the returning officer or high officials of Election Commission Secretariat if they found any lapses or irregularities as per law in the elections.
The irregularities include snatching ballot papers, deterioration of law and order situation, preventing voters to enter the centres, casting fake votes, attempting to establish illegal influence, etc.
The observers will make reports on the designated forms within 24 hours after the completion of the elections and if any important incident occurs in the elections they can write it in additional papers to submit to Election Commission Secretariat and returning officer. – Staff Reporter
