Ex-Customs Commissioner sent to jail on illegal property charge

Dhaka, April 01 – A Dhaka court on Monday sent a former Customs Commissioner and former member of Customs, Excise and VAT Appellate Tribunal to the jail in a graft case filed for acquiring illegal property.
The Metropolitan Sessions Judge of Dhaka, KM Imrul Kayes passed the order rejecting the accused Mohammad Nurul Islam’s bail plea.
On October 2, last year, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director, SMA Akhter Hamid Bhuiyan filed the case with Ramna Model Police Station of the capital.
Earlier, on November 13, last year, High Court bench of Justice Obaidul Hasan and Justice SM Quddus Zaman granted the accused eight weeks’ bail and accordingly he surrendered before the courft on January 7. The court fixed April 1 for hearing in the case.
After hearing, the court rejected Nurul Islam’s bail petition and sent him to the jail.
Earlier, senior lawyer Syed Rezaur Rahaman moved the bail petition of the accused while ACC prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam opposed his bail plea. – Special Correspondent
