Five police charged on death of Savar businessman

Police submitted charge sheet against five policemen over the death of Savar businessman Shamim Sarkar in June.
Investigation Officer, Inspector Md Aminur Rahman of Savar Model Police Station, filed the charge sheet with the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Dhaka on Monday, while Senior Judicial Magistrate Toiabul Hasan fixed September 5 for hearing in the case.
The accused are Ashulia police Sub Inspector Emdadul Haq, Savar police Assistant Sub Inspector Akidul Islam, constables Mozaffal Hossain, Ramjan Ali, and Yusuf Ali. They are now jail and they were suspended on June 6.
According to case details, ASI Akidul Islam detained land businessman Shamim Sarkar and his nephew Saiful from ‘Topu Pharmacy’ of Hemayetpur on Jun 5 and demanded Tk 500,000 but later came down to Tk 200,000.
As Shamim refused to pay the amount, they were taken to the leather industries police outpost and confined Saiful to a room and tortured Shamim in an adjacent room and eventually he was killed.
Shamis’s brother Amin Sarkar filed a case with the Savar Model Police Station against the five policemen over the death.
Two probe teams were formed and investigation revealed that one of the policemen was not involved with the killing. – Court Correspondent
