Reiterating that there is no existence of Middle East-based militant organisation IS in Bangladesh, Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque here on Tuesday emphasised creating mass awareness to curb militant activities in the country.He came up with the observation during a press briefing at the new office building of DIG (Khulna Range) at Boira in the city.
Replying to a question, the IGP said the December-30 municipal elections will be held peacefully as the recent past ones were held for efficient role of the law enforcement agencies.
The police chief said legal action will be taken against the violators of electoral code of conduct.
Adequate number of law enforcers will remain on duty during the polling day and the following day to avert any unpleasant incident, he added.
Advising not to bring out any victory procession after winning the polls, the IGP said prior permission from local police must be taken to bring out the rally to avoid any untoward situation.
Replying to a question, he said they are planning for an allocation of Tk 1,000 crore to meet transportation problem as well as to buy sophisticated equipment to control criminal activities in 10 districts under Khulna Range and Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP).
DIG (Khulna Range} SM Monir-uzzaman, KMP Commissioner Nibash Chandra Majhi and senior police officers were present.
Earlier, the IGP formally inaugurated the newly constructed buildings of Khalishpur Police Station and the DIG (Khulna Range) office.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday claimed that vested quarters, both at home and abroad, are hatching conspiracies spreading IS’ presence here to make political gains.
“Law enforcement and intelligence agencies forces have not found the presence of IS in Bangladesh,” he said while addressing a views-exchange meeting with Alem-Ulema at an eidgah in the city’s Mohammadpur area.
Alleging that vested quarters were carrying out targeted killings to hinder the country’s progress, the Home Minister said police and intelligence agencies have found evidence that the recent killings, including two foreigners’, and the attacks on Shia mosque in Bogra and Hossaini Dalan in old Dhaka had been pre-planned ones.
He said a foreign vested group is involved in the conspiracy to destroy Muslims and Islam.
Asaduzzaman called upon the Alem-Ulema to motivate people that Islam is the religion of peace and it never patronises militants. “It’s the duty of the Alem-Ulema to inform people what they should do and what not,” he added.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah also addressed the meeting chaired by local MP and Awami League joint secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak.
Religious scholars and Khatibs of various mosques of Mohammadpur, Adabar and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar areas were present at the views-exchange meeting.
