ILO team visits building collapse site

A high-profile International Labour Organization (ILO) team visited Savar on Wednesday to offer its support and expedite action by all parties following the collapse of the Rana Plaza Building in Savar.ILO Deputy Director-General for Field Operations, Gilbert Houngbo led the team.

Gilbert Houngbo said a comprehensive programme for workers must include- dealing with unsound factories, including through relocation and infrastructure improvement; establishing credible labour inspection; high-level political commitment to enforcement of laws and regulations; encouragement of social dialogue on safety and health; and the adoption of labour legislation guaranteeing effectively inter alia rights of organization and collective bargaining in line with ILO standards.

ILO Director-General Guy Ryder sent a letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urging immediate action to prevent a recurrence of the latest in a series of entirely avoidable workplace tragedies.

The ILO has expressed its deep sadness at the horrific loss of life and injuries caused by the collapse of the building on April 24 and its heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved families.banglanews.com
