New Speaker urges opposition to join JS

Voicing her hope that she will be able to play an effective role, newly elected Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Wednesday urged the opposition to join parliament and play their role in the House.“It’s a milestone in empowering women in the country,” the country’s first female and youngest Speaker said expressing her hope that she would be able to make parliament effective with the participation of all MPs from both aisles.

The 47-year-old Speaker made the remarks while talking to journalists after paying homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths at his portrait at Dhanmondi 32 in the capital.

Shirin Sharmin hoped that she would be able to discharge her duties properly following the Constitution and the Rules of Procedures.

She expressed her gratitude to the Leader of the House, the Deputy Leader of the House, the Deputy Speaker, the Chief Whip, MPs and the people of all walks of life for her election as the Speaker.

Later, Dr Shirin paid tributes to the Liberation War martyrs by placing wreaths at the National Mausoleum at Savar.

After placing wreaths at the National Mausoleum, she visited the injured survivors of Savar building collapse at the Combined Military Hospital, Dhaka and wished their early recovery. The 9th division GOC, Maj Gen Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardi, was also present on the occasion.

Dr Shirin also visited the collapsed Rana Plaza site at Savar and prayed for salvation of the departed souls.

She was sworn in as the Speaker of Parliament on Tuesday evening.UNB
