Probe of alleged graft by ex-judge who aquitted Tarique

Dhaka – The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) will quiz two court stenographers on Thursday in connection with the allegation of illegal wealth accumulation by former judge Motahar Hossain.
The Commission has recently sent letters, signed by ACC deputy director and inquiry officer Harunur Rashid, to the stenographers asking them to be present at the ACC head office here at 10 am on Thursday, ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told journalists.The stenographers are M Abul Hasan of Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 and M Nurul Islam of Special Judge Court-3.
The ACC received a graft allegation against the former judge 2-3 weeks ago. After examining the allegation, the Commission recently decided to launch an inquiry into the alleged graft of the judge.
According to the allegation received by the Commission, former special judge of Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge Court Motahar Hossain accumulated huge movable and immovable wealth illegally and laundered money abroad when he was a judge.
On Monday January 20, the ACC appointed an officer to conduct the inquiry against the alleged graft of judge Motahar Hossain and sent letters to the special branch of the Additional IGP and immigration authorities so that the former judge cannot leave the country.
Judge Motahar Hossain did hold trial of the accused in the sensational Khalaf murder case and awarded death of half a dozen accused. The High Court later confirmed the death sentence to the prime accused, who is said to have shot the Saudi Embassy man, and awarded other punishment of the remaining convicts.
On November 17 last, Judge Motahar Hossain acquitted Tarique Rahman, BNP’s senior Vice Chairman and elder son of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, in a money-laundering case involving Tk 20.41 crore. He went on leave preparatory to retirement on December 30, 2013. – UNB
