Gen Manzoor murder verdict Feb 10; Ershad key accused

Dhaka – After over three decades of his murder in captivity, a Dhaka court on Wednesday set February 10 for delivering its verdict in the Maj Gen Manzoor killing case.Dhaka’s first additional district and sessions judge Hosne Ara Akhter fixed the date after the prosecution’s closing argument.  Jatiya Party chairman and prime minister’s special envoy HM Ershad is the prime accused in the case.  He is now on bail.  A former military dictator, Ershad along with other accused was present at the court during the prosecution’s closing argument.
According to the case statement, Maj Gen Abul Manzoor, Bir Uttam, was killed in police custody after being captured at the Chittagong Cantonment on June 1, 1981, a day after President General Ziaur Rahman was assassinated at the local Circuit House in an abortive coup.
Manzoor’s brother Barrister Abul Mansur Ahmed filed the case with Panchlaish Police Station, Chittagong, on February 28, 1995, 14 years after the killing.
Later, the case was transferred to Dhaka from Chittagong for its disposal.- UNB
