Islami Bank under new Chairman, Acting MD, new committees

Former secretary Arastoo Khan has been made chairman of the most profitable private bank in Bangladesh.
Executive Committee Chairman Syed Ahsanul Alam Parvez has become a vice-chairman.
Senior Deputy Managing Director Mahbubul Alam is acting managing director of the bank now, different agencies reported on Thursday.
The changes were made after Chairman Mustafa Anwar, Vice-Chairman Azizul Haq, and Managing Director Mohammad Abdul Mannan stepped down on health grounds at the 240th meeting of the board of directors on Thursday, new Vice-Chairman was quoted as saying.
Khan, who replaced Mustafa Anwar, was appointed at a board meeting at the city’s Radisson Hotel.Yousif Abdullah Al Rajhi was reelected vice-chairman and Prof Syed Ahsanul Alam elected vice-chairman, said the bank in a statement. Anwar was replaced a year before the expiry of his tenure, sources said.
Khan, a former additional secretary at the Economic Relations Division, became a director of the bank as the representative of Armada Spinning Mills Ltd.
Until November 2015, Khan served as a member at the Planning Commission. From 2001 to 2014, he worked in the finance ministry as deputy secretary, joint secretary and additional secretary.
Khan sat on the boards of IFIC Bank Ltd, Karmasangsthan Bank and Agrani Bank Ltd. After retiring from government job, he became chairman of Bangladesh Commerce Bank Ltd, from which he resigned on Tuesday.
The Islami Bank appointed Khan as a director on December 15 last year. The central bank later approved the appointment.
Khan was appointed chairman of Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited on Jan 11 last year for three years.
The former Planning Commission member had been an additional secretary at the Economic Relations Division. He had also been at the finance ministry for a long time.
He also worked as director of several government and private banks, including IFIC Bank Limited, Karmasangstan Bank, and Agrani Bank.
Bangladesh Bank has been monitoring the Islami Bank. An observer was appointed to the bank in 2010.
Different Committees of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited have been reformed. Major General (Rtd.) Engr. Abdul Matin, Dr. Md. Zillur Rahman and Md. Abdul Mabud, PPM were elected as chairmen of Executive Committee, Audit Committee and Risk Management Committee respectively.

Major General (Retd.) Engr. Abdul Matin served as Master General of Ordnance, the Principal Staff Officer and other capacities in the Bangladesh Army during 1978-2014. He was Chairman of the National Smart Identity Card Preparation Committee under the national Election Commission. He also served in policy making in different institutions including the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, Bangladesh Ordnance Factory, Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory and Bangladesh University of Professionals. He obtained B.Sc. degree in Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and Masters Degree on War Studies and Defense Studies from National University.
Dr. Md. Zillur Rahman was Managing Director of Bangladesh Development Bank Limited and served in different capacities of Janata Bank, Rupali Bank, and Bangladesh Krishi Bank. He was Director of Investment Corporation of Bangladesh, Director and Chairman of Audit Committee of Bangladesh Commerce Bank. His career began with joining Bangladesh Krishi Bank as Planning and Research Officer. He served BIBM and IBB as member of Executive Committee. He obtained PhD in Industrial Credit Management from Rajshahi University and M.Com in Management from the University of Dhaka.
Md. Abdul Mabud, PPM was Additional Inspector General of Bangladesh Police and Director General of the Immigration and Passport Department. He fought in the liberation war in 1971. He served in the police department in various capacities since 1973. For outstanding professional contribution, he achieved several awards including the President’s Police Medal 2000. He is a member of the Bangladesh Economic Association and a life member of Bangladesh Cancer Society. He obtained Graduation in Economics and participated in different seminar and training in home and abroad.

Syed Monjurul Islam, former Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Shipping, was the chairman of Bakhrabad Gas System Ltd., Jamuna Petroleum Ltd. and Standard Asiatic Oil Co. He also served as director of different Govt. institutions including Bangladesh Shilpo Bank (now BDBL), IFIC Bank, National Housing & Finance Ltd., BTCL, Industrial Promotion Development Co. and Bangladesh Shipping Co. He did B.com (Hons.) in Finance and MBA from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka in 1980 and 1983 respectively. He was born in 1956 at Rajoir Upazila of Madaripur District.
Shamim Mohammad Afzal is the Director General of Islamic Foundation Bangladesh. He was the Judge of Speedy Trial Tribunal in Sylhet. Earlier, he discharged his duties as a District and Sessions Judge from 1983 to 2008. He worked as Legal Officer of Special Tribunal Court and Ministry of Law. He has completed his post graduation (LLM) from the Department of Law, University of Dhaka. – Press release
