‘It’s now a murder case’

The ‘attempt to murder case’ filed in connection with the killing of Arif Rayhan Dwip, a former student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), will be considered as a ‘murder case’. Judge Harun-ur-Rashid of the Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court passed the order following a petition filed by Jasim Uddin Dewan, investigation officer of the case and Inspector of Detective Branch of Police.
In the petition, IO Jasim Uddin stated, “Dwip died as Hefajat-e-Islam activist Mejbah Uddin hacked him with a sharp weapon. “Mejbah is the killer of Dwip. The accused Mejbah committed crime under section 302 of the criminal procedure.”
Twenty-three-year old Dwip, who was a third year student of Buet’s Mechanical Engineering Department, succumbed to his injuries at a city hospital on Tuesday, 84 days after the hacking.
Dwip’s elder brother, M Riaz Morshed, filed a case with Chawkbazar Police Station bringing charges against Mejbah under sections 324,326 and 327 of the criminal procedure.
On April 17, detectives arrested Mejbah, a fourth year student of Buet’s Civil Engineering Department, in the case who confessed to hacking Dwip before the court the following day. He is now in police custody. (Source: UNB)
